David H. Leroy Fellowship

The Idaho Office of the Solicitor General (OSG) invites talented recent law school graduates to apply for the OSG David H. Leroy Fellowship. This Fellowship offers one new lawyer the opportunity to work closely with the Solicitor General and his team on high-profile and significant legal issues. The Fellowship will be a one-year term running from September to August each year. This is a paid fellowship.

The OSG serves as the State’s premier litigation team. It is tasked with ensuring that exceptional work product marks the work of the Attorney General’s Office. It also provides strategic litigation advice to all divisions within the Attorney General’s Office and oversees the appellate work, including preparing briefs and petitions and arguing select appeals in state and federal courts. And it is the lead point of contact with other Attorney General offices around the country to address issues of interstate concern.

The Fellow will participate firsthand in all of the OSG’s operations and will work directly with the Solicitor General and his team. The Fellow can expect to work on a variety of civil, criminal, and administrative matters involving today’s most important constitutional, statutory, and policy questions. We also expect that the Fellow will argue at least one appeal in a state or federal court.

The benefits package includes paid holidays, sick leave, compensatory time for work in excess of a 40-hour week, low-cost downtown parking, and PERSI retirement, plus options for medical/dental insurance, wellness program, 401k, deferred compensation program, and pre-tax flexible spending accounts for qualifying childcare and medical expenses. The office is a qualifying employer for purposes of the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF).  Located in beautiful downtown Boise, which offers a rich variety of both cultural and recreational opportunities.  Idaho’s world-famous fly-fishing, mountain biking, skiing, kayaking and hiking are all within easy access.

The OSG is looking for principled, creative, and hardworking applicants. Applicants must be recent law school graduates with a strong academic record and writing ability. The David H. Leroy Fellowship honors the man who pioneered Idaho’s Solicitor General’s Office. As Idaho’s 28th Attorney General, David Leroy recognized the importance of dedicated appellate lawyers and was the first to create an Office of the Solicitor General in Idaho. His commitment to public service, integrity, and leadership are values his namesake Fellowship seeks to cultivate and carry on. New lawyers accepted to the David H. Leroy Fellowship will take up a high calling, and there will be no better model for them than the one General Leroy cemented.
