Attorney General, Secretary of State Launch Internet Safety Campaign
(Boise) – Attorney General Lawrence Wasden and Secretary of State Ben Ysursa today announced ProtecTeens, a statewide effort to inform and assist parents regarding the dangers children face from sexual predators on the Internet.
First Lady Patricia Kempthorne, the Idaho Prosecuting Attorneys Association, the Idaho Sheriffs Association, the Idaho Chiefs of Police Association, the Idaho Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, the Idaho Medical Association, the State Department of Education, the Idaho School Boards Association, the Idaho Association of School Administrators, and the Idaho Parent Teacher Association are partners with Wasden and Ysursa in ProtecTeens.
ProtecTeens consists of a 21-minute video presentation, the Attorney General’s Internet Safety Manual, the Family Contract for Internet Safety, and information about parental control software.
“There is evidence that thousands of Idaho children receive unwanted sexual material or solicitations over the Internet every year,” Attorney General Wasden said. “Our law enforcement community has been extremely successful in tracking down, arresting and locking up many of these sexual predators. I hope that ProtecTeens will help parents understand the magnitude of the dangers and take an active role in protecting their children from Internet predators.”
“ProtecTeens will assist parents as they confront the digital divide between parents and children,” Secretary of State Ysursa said. “Through ProtecTeens, parents will be able to identify potentially harmful situations on the Internet and engage in a meaningful discussion with their children about responsible Internet activities.”
Attorney General Wasden will introduce ProtecTeens to communities throughout Idaho with a series of nine presentations to Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs, beginning today. Audience members will receive a “take-home” copy of the ProtecTeens compact disc.
A public presentation is scheduled for 7:00 PM Thursday, November 17, at Highland High School Auditorium in Pocatello.
Members of the partner organizations will also receive the ProtecTeens CD and may be available to present ProtecTeens in their communities. Wasden invited groups interested in a presentation to contact his office at (208) 334–2400.
